John Okafor joined the Nigerian film industry in 1998 but was unable to secure lucrative parts because producers were unwilling to give him the opportunity to display his ability in significant movies.
He rose to notoriety in 2004 with his performance in the hit comedic movie “Mr. Ibu.” He portrayed the father of a troubled son. Osita Iheme took on the role of the son.
The team created an exceedingly funny film that was widely distributed across the country and was recognised as the greatest comedy project at the time.
His performance in the film earned him the Africa Movie Academy Award for Best Comic Actor in Nigeria in 2005.
He also got the nickname “Mr Ibu” from the movie.
Okafor has appeared in more than 200 Nollywood films, including Mr. Ibu and His Son, Coffin Producers, Husband Suppliers, International Players, Mr. Ibu in London, Police Recruit, 9 Wives, Ibu in Prison, and Keziah.

Veteran actor John Okafor, better known as Mr Ibu, died after a protracted struggle with blood clots on his leg. On Saturday, March 2, the actor died in a hospital in Lagos state.
For years, the actor struggled with blood clotting on his leg due to damaged blood vessels, as well as other health issues.
In October 2023, he went public to seek financial support to address his condition. There were plans to transport him abroad for additional medical care, but his physicians decided he wasn’t fit to fly.
In November 2023, he had his leg amputated as part of his therapy.
