Starz has renewed Power Book III: Raising Kanan for a fifth season, with the pickup for the spinoff starring Mekai Curtis coming as the fourth cycle of the show is in production in New York. Creator Sascha Penn will return as showrunner and exec producer.

The renewal means Raising Kanan will officially outlive Power Book II: Ghost, as the latter series will conclude with its upcoming fourth season. Starz, meanwhile, is developing a Power prequel series, Origins, which would follow Ghost and Tommy. Power Book IV: Force is currently filming its third season in Chicago.

“We know that our fans can’t get enough of Raising Kanan. As the inevitable evolution of this young man into a killer plays out, we knew we had much more backstory to share in this ever-escalating family saga,” said Kathryn Busby, president of originals at Starz. “As we continue to expand the storytelling within the Power universe, we’re looking forward to how this story may intersect with other Power characters during this prequel era.”

Curtis leads a cast that also includes Patina Miller, London Brown, Malcolm Mays, Hailey Kilgore and Joey Bada$$.

From executive producers Courtney Kemp and Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson, the Power series launched with the flagship series in 2014 and concluded in 2020 after six seasons and more than 60 episodes. The franchise expanded to Book II: Ghost, Book III: Raising Kanan and Book IV: Force.

Previous efforts to develop Influence as the fourth spinoff were unsuccessful as Starz says additional news in the Power franchise will be forthcoming while the premium cable network prepares to split off from its current ownership, Lionsgate. The studio’s Lionsgate Television produces the Power franchise and previously housed creator Kemp with an overall deal. She remains credited as an exec producer but is not creatively involved with the franchise since departing Lionsgate TV for a rich pact with Netflix.

The Starz roster of scripted originals also includes 50 Cent’s BMF, which was recently renewed for its fourth season ahead of its season three bow; Outlander and its prequel spinoff; P-Valley; and the upcoming Spartacus: House of Ashur, among others.
