The news anchor was born as Lester Don Holt Jr. on 8 March 1959 in San Francisco, California. Talking about his family, he is the youngest of four children of June (DeRozario) and Lester Don Holt, Sr. He went to Cordova High School for his studies to complete his graduation in 1977. Lester then joined California State University, Sacramento, to major in government, but he never graduated.

Together they share two children Stefan Holt and Cameron Holt. Both their sons are following a career pursuit of their dad. Stefan is a former news anchor at WMAQ-TV in Chicago, a station that is owned by NBC. Back in 2016, he joined WNBC and joined his father on the same floor.
