While most people became famous in the entertainment industry, Katherine Johnson worked behind closed doors and rose to prominence as a brain researcher and mathematician. Their fascinating and precise calculations have led to men traveling safely to the moon without obstacles. She has contributed in no small way to many National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) projects.
Ironically, few who are knowledgeable about scientific facts know her, yet after her character was portrayed by Taraji P Henson in the film, Hidden Figures . She became a person of interest and helped attract search engines who want to know a lot more about her. In the following paragraphs you will find the answers to your questions. Continue reading …
Katherine Johnson’s bio
Katherine Johnson is the youngest daughter and child of Joshua and Joylette Coleman, born August 26, 1918 in White Sulfur Springs. She has four other siblings. Her math mind started when she was a child, when she was an exceptional number cracker. With her stormy performance in class, she attended West Virginia State High School in 1928, graduating at age 14.
Also during her school days, Katherine’s interest in astronomy was sparked after taking a walk with her principal, during which she highlighted stars and constellations. She graduated from high school in 1932 and chose to attend West Virginia State College on a full scholarship. As a junior in college, Katherine Johnson majored in math and French after not deciding on a major. The humanities scholar later graduated with a degree in mathematics and French, becoming the first African American woman to graduate from the college at 18.
After high school, she accepted an offer to teach math and French at an elementary school in West Virginia. However, things did not go as smoothly as she had imagined. Most residents of West Virginia at the time were white, and because Katherine is African American, she encountered a lot of racial slur on her commute, but that didn’t deter her willingness to teach.
In the years that followed, she made an impression on many children, going from school to school as a teacher until 1953, when she was employed by the National Advisory Committee on Aeronautics (NACA), now known as the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA). There she served the organization as a “computer” (human-computer, ie someone who performed mathematical calculations before the invention of electronic computers), analyzing most of the issues and ensuring the accuracy of the work system. She was later transferred to a “perceived all-male working staff” known as the “Guidance and Control Division” of Langley’s Flight Research Division.Meanwhile, from that point on, black NASA employees were treated differently. They had a separate toilet and female employees were not allowed to attend meetings or write their names on research reports.
From 1958 until her retirement Katherine Johnson served NASA as an aerospace technologist. With the success of their trajectory calculations, Alan Shepard made a spaceflight and landing on May 5, 1961. She was also one of the minds behind the 1961 Mercury mission. As a result, Katherine Johnson became a top-notch at Nasa and was mentioned whenever there were math calculations to solve. In 1961, her work helped found the Alan Shepard Freedom 7 Mercury Capsule. She has also proved extremely valuable in her accurate calculations, which have revealed the success of numerous trips by various astronauts to the moon and back. What’s more, she’s one of the minds behind the success of the journey to the planet Mars.
What about her contributions to the states thatPresident Barack Obama, former President of the United States of America, presented the Presidential Medal of Freedom to Katherine Johnson on November 24, 2015.
Family – parents, husband and children
Joshua, Katherine’s father, worked as a farmer, while her mother, Joylette, was his support system. Despite the struggles of racism, Joshua and Joylette made sure their children got the best education and helped them get through all the bullies and hard times.
After graduating from college, Katherine settled down and married a man named James Francis Globe. With him she had three daughters, Constance, Joylette and Katherine. All three followed in their mother’s footsteps and also became teachers. Over the years, Katherine and James lived together and battled all health challenges together until James died of a brain tumor in 1956.
Four years after the death of James FrancisGlobe, Katherine married James A Johnson – a man she had met during her days as a choir member at Carver Memorial Presbyterian. With him she has six grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren
Is Katherine Johnson dead or alive?
As of the day this article was written, KatherineJohnson is very much alive. Though she’s now over a hundred years old and counting, she’s spent all her days on earth, enjoying much of the fruit she planted during her heyday at NASA.
