Althea Gibson (August 25, 1927 – September 28, 2003) was an American tennis player and professional golfer who was the first black athlete of either gender to break the colour line in international tennis. She was born in New York City and raised in Los Angeles. In 1956, she became the first person of colour to win a Grand Slam championship, becoming the first African-American to do so (the French Open). Following that, she won both Wimbledon and the U.S. Nationals (the forerunner of the U.S. Open), and she repeated the feat in 1958, earning her the title of Female Athlete of the Year from the Associated Press in each of those seasons. With 11 Grand Slam championships to her credit, including six doubles crowns, she was admitted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame and the International Women’s Sports Hall of Fame, respectively. “She is one of the best players who ever lived,” said Robert Ryland, a tennis contemporary and former coach of Venus and Serena Williams. “She is one of the greatest players who ever lived,” he said. “Martina was unable to touch her. I believe she would triumph against the Williams sisters.” In addition, she made history by being the first black golfer to participate on the women’s professional golf circuit in the early 1960s. Gibson was often likened to Jackie Robinson at a period in which racism and prejudice were prevalent in sports and society as a whole. “Her path to achievement was a difficult one,” Billie Jean King acknowledged, “but I never saw her give up.” She was an example to everyone because of what she was able to do at a time when it was very difficult to play tennis at all if you were black, according to David Dinkins, a former mayor of New York City. “I feel privileged to have followed in such illustrious shoes,” Venus Williams said in a statement. “Her achievements laid the groundwork for my success, and her legacy will carry on through players like myself and Serena Williams, as well as many more in the future.”Althea Gibson Net Worth : $ 5 Million
